Melkbosstrand horror taxi-truck collision kills seven, leaves 10 injured

Seven people were killed and 10 more were injured when a truck and minibus taxi collided in a horrific motor vehicle accident on the R27 in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town on Tuesday morning, 8 June.


According to ER24, emergency responders from various organisations responded to the scene and found the truck and taxi on the sides of the road.

Authorities closed off the road while medics and rescue personnel attended to the patients. Seven people sustained fatal injuries in the Melkbosstrand collision – some of them were still trapped inside the taxi. “Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead,” said ER24.

The 10 patients that survived the crash were treated for minor to critical injuries at the scene before being transported to hospitals – including Grote Schuur, Tygerberg, New Somerset and Wesfleur – for further care.

One seriously injured patient was airlifted to hospital by the AMS medical helicopter for intensive care.


Western Cape Emergency Medical Service s (EMS) spokesperson Deanna Bessick said the accident took place at 8:55. The vehicles involved in the crash were a Toyota Quantum and an articulated truck carrying shipping cargo.

“The taxi, which was travelling from the direction of Cape Town, took the Melkbosstrand turn off and the truck hit the passenger side of the taxi. Both vehicles overturned,” said Bessick.

Four men and three women were among the seven patients that were killed in the collision. Furthermore, six women were critically injured while three men and another woman sustained minor injuries.

“We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” Dr Shaheem de Vries, the director of Western Cape Government Health.

“We salute the brave EMS staff members for their continuous commitment to serve communities in our province with zeal and perserverance, despite the challenges they must endure at times.”
