Lionel Cronje: Rugby’s ultimate journeyman returns to Sharks

Lionel Cronje has returned to Durban and is training with the Sharks ahead of the 2021 Currie Cup season.

Cronje, now 32, is rugby’s ultimate journeyman having represented a number of teams both in South Africa and abroad.

Lionel Cronje, who is equally comfortable in the flyhalf and fullback positions, was born in Bloemfontein and played his youth rugby for the Border Bulldogs and Free State Cheetahs.

He represented Shimlas as varsity level and has enjoyed stints at the Stormers, Western Province, Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Sharks and Southern Kings in Mzansi.

He also turned out for the Brumbies in 2014 and most recently Toyota Verblitz in Japan from 2017 to date.

With the Sharks due to be without nine players due to Springbok commitments in the British & Irish Lions series, Cronje’s experience will be invaluable to the Durban side – who he played for in 2014-2015 – in the Currie Cup.

This year’s Currie Cup is due to kick off on the weekend of 18/19 June.
