Cape Town fire: Wheelchair-bound woman and young boys perish in blaze

A disabled woman and two children have been killed in a fire in Bonteheuwel, Western Cape, early on Sunday morning, with another woman and young boy treated for serious burn wounds. 

Three killed in Western Cape fire  

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services said in a statement on Sunday 6 June that they received the emergency call at 1:40 this morning and dispatched crews from Epping, Belhar and Gugulethu to the scene of the incident in Oliehout Road.

“A woman in a wheelchair and two boys were killed in a fire in Bonteheuwel during the early hours of this morning, Sunday June 6,” they said.

“Firefighters found two structures engulfed in flames and managed to contain and extinguish the fire by 2.52am.”

They said that they made the grim discovery of the bodies of a woman and two boys under the debris, “while one woman and a boy were treated for burn wounds and transported to a nearby hospital”.

“The cause of the blaze is unknown and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service in Cape Town,” they said.

Father and son killed in Gqeberha  

Meanwhile, a man and his son died in a shack blaze in William Slammert Drive in Bethelsdorp, Gqberha, early on Saturday morning. 

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said in a statement on Sunday that police responded to a complaint of a shack on fire. 

“The fire brigade was summoned and the fire was extinguished however at about 5:00,” she said, but added that a fire once again erupted in the shack next to the one that burnt in the same yard at the back of the main house.  

“In the second shack, two males were found burnt. The deceased were identified as Aston McKay (father approximately 53-years-old) and Alistair McKay (son approximately 24 years old),” she said. 

The cause of the fire will be investigated and police have opened an inquest docket.
